Where Pettinger started

Dave Pettinger grew up on Spokane’s North Side, spending his summers loading trucks and hauling furniture up and down South Hill daylight-basement stairs long before he owned a dolly.

What stuck with him was simple: muscle barely matters in a good Inland Northwest move. What matters is whether anyone bothered to read the slope of the driveway, the basement stair run, the building’s rules, and the winter forecast before they showed up.

A daylight-basement stair run, a quarter-mile gravel driveway, and a January ice storm make or break a move. I built the family company around getting all three right. — Dave Pettinger

The company by the numbers

Since 2010 the trucks, the crews, and the paperwork have all stayed under one Spokane roof.

Why Dave started it

He got tired of watching Spokane families hire a cheap outfit that lowballed the quote over the phone, then padded the bill once the truck was loaded at the bottom of the driveway.

  1. 2010 — Dave and his brother Greg buy one truck and run their first Valley jobs themselves
  2. 2013 — Brett Lawson joins and takes over the piano and gun-safe work down the basement stairs
  3. 2014 — Travis Mercer comes on as crew chief, learning every steep driveway in the county
  4. 2019 — Dave’s daughter Megan steps in to coordinate downtown COIs, elevator windows, and storage

The unglamorous part

What the cut-rate outfits skip is the logistics that actually keep an Inland Northwest move from falling apart, and that’s the part we carry.

  • Quarter-mile gravel driveways on Green Bluff, Mead, and Colbert acreage get a shuttle truck so the load still moves
  • Browne’s Addition and South Hill Craftsman homes get crews who know how furniture turns a tight historic staircase
  • Kendall Yards and downtown buildings get their Certificate of Insurance filed and the elevator booked before the date
  • The schedule bends around hard winters when snow and ice glaze the driveways and close the Snoqualmie and Fourth of July passes

Who you’ll deal with

The same family and long-tenured crew run every job, each owning a piece of the work.

  • Dave PettingerOwner — still runs the big Liberty Lake and piano jobs himself
  • Sara PettingerOffice manager & co-owner — writes every flat quote and pulls the COIs
  • Greg PettingerOperations & dispatch — maps each day around the I-90 grade and winter ice
  • Travis MercerLead crew chief on the South Hill, Valley, and downtown jobs
  • Brett LawsonSenior mover & piano specialist for uprights, grands, and safes
  • Megan PettingerMove coordinator & storage — COI timing, elevators, and between-sale holds

Sixteen years on, it’s still the whole family running the whole company. That’s not changing. — Dave Pettinger, owner, Pettinger Family Movers
